We began preparing materials for the week ahead then spent much of the day learning about Hawaiian culture from Sotero, a church member, native Hawaiian, owner of a local coffee coop and wise, godly guy. As he shared about the islands' blends of cultures and personalities, he talked about God's perfect design in farming and how it showcased His grace. Then he schooled us on how grace comes with a responsibility of stewardship.
From there we went to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, or a city of refuge. It was used in ancient times as an escape for those who broke the strict sacred laws. It was pretty intense.
Finally, we stopped at a local farmer's market, canvassed the area inviting people to our upcoming outreaches and had pão de queijo and dinner with a local church family originally from Brasil! We are well, adjusting to the heat and realizing that if you don't throw away your lei, it can get bugs! Aloha!
