Greeting from Dubai! We are currently waiting for our final flight home to Boston. We will board in a few hours. While we wait, we are dong some final wrap ups as a team.
Our days in Durban were full!! We visited different schools and communities. We led youth group at 2 different churches, packed food parcels at the church and visited an HIV/AIDS Center. Each day brought new experiences and activities. We were stretched and challenged. The weather did not play in our favor for our entire trip. We saw the sun on the first day and the last day. We were happy to see it on our last day as we made a trip to the ocean for shopping. We managed to get our feet wet and enjoy the amazing views. Although many of us want to stay behind, we have all made it to Dubai. It was sad to say goodbye to our new friends. We looked forward to seeing families at the celebration tomorrow and sharing about our trip. See you soon!! Parents, mark your calendar for our Quest Celebration, Saturday, February 25, at the BCNE building in Northborough, MA. We will have a light lunch and time of sharing about the trip. We will meet from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Students will leave with their families following the Celebration. Please RSVP to [email protected] the number of your immediate family who will attend. Space is limited to immediate family, mentors, youth leader and pastor.
Last night we checked into the Bed and Breakfast where we are staying. The owners gave us a quick tour of our accommodations. We got to spend more time talking with them at breakfast today. It was delicious and we heard many interesting stories about their background.
Today was our fun day. We were picked up this morning by Barry, George and Thandy. We headed to the church where we spent time hanging out with them, playing games. We learned about their roles at the church and about CAST, the non-profit organization the church started. From there we picked up Deb, Barry's wife, She works at the church with the youth. We had an interesting time learning about the Zulu culture through a show. We saw traditional dances and heard songs. They also have a reptile experience where we saw crocs, lizards, and snakes. Finally we headed to Tala Animal Reserve. Although it was cloudy and rainy, we saw many amazing animals, including giraffes, zebras, rhinos and hippos to name a few. We ended our day back at Westville Baptist Church. We served their young adult group by cleaning up from a dinner meeting and serving them dessert and tea. Tomorrow is a very full day of ministry. Please pray for strength as we finish out our next few days. Sawubona! (Hello in Zulu)
Our Sunday adventure started off waking up early and packing our suitcases to leave Shoreline Hotel. We began our day attending Baracha Church and while we were there, Chris kindly introduced us to the congregation. The team led the church in a worship song with Gabby playing the drums (Don't worry Lucian, we got a video) Ashley and David then shared their stories with the congregation. We left the service early and traveled to Sezela where we attended Emmanuel Evangelical Church. Again we were introduced and shared a song. Ashley and Gabby shared their testimonies with the congregation. The church shared lunch with us. We have had the chance to try many of the South African Indian food. It can be spicy, but they kept it a bit mild for us. Everyone has enjoyed the food. This gave us great opportunities to talk everyone. We learned a lot about their culture and ways of life. Our last few moments with Chris and Michele were spent at their house, as we talked with them and their sons. Their son Lance is just one year older than us. It was interesting to talk about the differences and similarities of our countries. We then made the short drive back to Durban. We did the drive in the dark upon our arrival so it was great to see it during the day. The last church we attended was Westville Baptist Church, and it felt a lot like home. Everyone tried Rooibos (Red Bush) tea and most of us loved it. (not David!) We ended our night with a lot of laughs at dinner (and on the bus!) with our new friends Deb and Barry from Westville. We can not wait to tell you more about how God is working through our team! We will post more pictures tomorrow. See you soon Hamba Kahle (See you in Zulu) We apologize for the delay in posting. This is our first time with a connection. We had great flights and all bags arrived! Everyone is healthy and happy!
We were greeted by friends we are working with while we are here. We left almost immediately and drove to the Southcoast. We enjoyed a meal with Chris and Michelle and had cake to celebrate Laney's birthday! Today had been a full day. We spent the morning at a safe house for children who do not have any parents. We played games for a while before sharing with them. We heard testimonies from Rafa and Angelica and David shared about Elijah. We also sang some songs with them before having lunch with them. We then headed directly to a school that we were supposed to visit yesterday. Although there were no students there today we got an idea of what school is like from the principal. He gave us a tour and explained about his school. We had a quick break, well more like a planning break. As I type students are at youth group. Three different churches came together for the meeting tonight. Gabby and Marcus led some games. Laney shared her story. Their praise band helped with songs that I can hear from outside where I am posting. After 2 church services on the Southcoast tomorrow morning, we will head back to Durban. Our connection should be better while we are there. We appreciate your prayers and are learning so much already. South Africa team. The SA team had a minor hiccup yesterday. Here we are 24 hours later ready to board our plane. The group spent a second night together in Northborough. It was a great team building time for us all. We are excited to board the massive plane that just pulled up to the gate. We will post as soon as we are able to from ZA.
Questies will travel to South Africa after two years away. The Q18 SA team has seven students and three faculty. Currently they are preparing through a shared study, meeting with a mentor, actively involved in their local church and fund raising. Pray for the team as they participate in the Quest experience.
