Wow, we can't believe how this week has flown by! We are so blessed to have been able to witness God's work being done in Glasgow through Dennistoun Baptist Church. Today we returned to DBC's new building in Riddrie for some manual labor. We helped clear out debris from the building and clean up the yard surrounding the church. We pray that God uses that building in mighty ways! To end our time here, we split up to attend four of DBC's mission communities where we got to share meals with church members and discuss Sunday's sermon. We will miss the friends we've made here so much but are excited to take back to our home, churches, and communities what God has taught and shown us this week! We have an early flight in the morning and only have a wee bit hours to sleep, pray for rest and smooth travel!
We have had quite the emphasis on prayer this week! Today was a first for most of our students as we spent the morning prayer walking in a local mall. As we walked we took the time to pray for overarching issues in the community such as addiction, broken families, and gang violence. We also were attentive to the Spirit and prayed for people highlighted to us as we walked around. From there, we traveled to DBC's new church building that they are currently renovating in the neighborhood, Riddrie. DBC plans to not only plant a new church in this building but also put a cafe in it to engage the local community and help connect them to the church. It was so exciting to see and hear about DBC's plans for expanding their ministry in greater Glasgow and reaching more lost people. Lastly, we finished up the night hosting a youth event! Our students had the opportunity to enjoy the company of local teens close to their age and learn about what it is like growing up in Glasgow. Some students even stepped out in faith to engage in some spiritual conversations as well. It was a fun ending to another very long day.
Please pray that God carries our team through the end of our trip and that our students continue to lean into the ways God wants them to serve and learn! Another great day serving with DBC! Our crew split up for a bit today. One group had the opportunity to help with ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language), a weekly course that DBC hosts for the community. It was really amazing to see our Questies jump into a room full of people who spoke a variety of languages, including Arabic, Amharic, and Spanish. The other group took to the streets and spoke with local shop owners to ask if they could advertise DBC's community events (ESOL and men's football) in their stores, while also taking time to pray as they walked. Our students have really grown in their confidence in engaging with strangers and local community members as we've continued to partner with DBC. Finally in the afternoon we took an exciting trip to Edinburgh and finished off the evening back at DBC for a prayer meeting with church members.
Please pray that God would continue to stretch us more during our final days in Glasgow and that we would have an abundance of opportunities to engage in Gospel conversations. Today we spent the day in Dennistoun! We began the morning learning about the spiritual climate of Glasgow and how it is actually considered an "unreached people group". This lead us to move into conversations on how to effectively share the Gospel. One of the ways DBC has seen God work has been through prayer walking, which is something they do often. We had the opportunity to break up into groups and walk the streets asking God to highlight things to pray for. It was a great exercise in stepping out of our comfort zones in faith and praying bold prayers.
Another way DBC engages the community is though a weekly football (soccer) game for teenage boys and men from the neighborhood. Our guys had the chance to participate in some friendly competition and meet more locals. At the same time, our girls spent time with some women from the church. All in all, it was a full and great day! Please pray for tomorrow as we help host ESOL (English as a Second or Other Language) course at the church! Happy Sunday! We started off today heading to Dennistoun Baptist Church in Dennistoun, which is a neighborhood of Glasgow. We will be partnering with DBC for the rest of our week and joining in their weekly ministry opportunities. We worshipped and heard preaching on Ephesians 1:3-5.
After service it is typical for the congregation to stay after and enjoy tea, coffee, and biscuits and each other's company. Our team had the opportunity to practice engaging with new people and learning about their lives and what brought them to DBC or Glasgow. We had the opportunity to spend the rest of the day with church members. Later in the evening we returned to DBC for their very first 3-2-1 course the church is piloting. This course (similar to the Alpha course if you're familiar) focuses on addressing foundational questions and concepts of the Christian faith and is great tool to help engage people with different beliefs in Gospel conversations. Overall, a great day and we are so excited for spend more time with the DBC family and learn more about their ministry and work in Glasgow and are so grateful we get to be a part of it! After full night of sleep our team was rested, renewed, and ready to explore some more! While it was a day full of pivots and a need for flexibility, we made it to Stirling, which is about a 40 minutes commute from Glasgow. We met up with TJ and some more new friends from the church, Jeremy and Calum, to tour Stirling Castle. The architecture and scenery was breathtaking and the team enjoyed learning more about Scotland's rich history. After the castle, we got a bite to eat and headed back to Glasgow for the evening where Jeremy graciously hosted us at his flat! We got to worship together, try some unique Scottish snacks, and played some games to end the night. We also had the privilege of hearing from Bri and Grayton (church interns from the U.S.) as they shared their stories of God's work in their lives and the way He called them to mission in Glasgow this past year. It was so encouraging to hear from two young people who are truly living surrendered to God's will and also for our students to see what living life on mission could look like after high school. Today has helped us better acclimate to Scottish culture and also get a glimpse into their deep religious roots and also see how the spiritual climate has shifted greatly since then. We are so excited to join Dennistoun Baptist Church for Sunday worship tomorrow morning. Please pray that our team would continue to be stretched by God outside our comfort zones and truly engage with the people we will get to meet and be impacted by!
The team touched down safely in Glasgow at 8:00 am and hit the ground running! We met with our hosts, TJ and Deena, and our new friends for the week, Grayton and Bri, and took to the city center to explore, talk to locals, and learn about the culture here. We are tired but spirits are high, please pray for sustained energy for the rest of the day and rest tonight :)
We've made it to Dublin! It's dark and early, 5:50 am, and as we wait to board, we're getting excited to arrive in Glasgow!
Pray for us as we keep our energy going for the full day ahead! Scotland
